Summary

This latest FPS from the aficionados of military games Novalogic takes its roots from the developer's recent Black Hawk Down, yet expands almost entirely into the multiplayer side of things. The result is a quite massively multiplayer affair (with support for up to 150 players online), complete with a host of commandable vehicles, in very similar vein to Digital Illusions' Battlefield series.

The setting for the frag-fest is Indonesia, sometime in the near future. As the story has it, the country is on the verge of disintegration, with regional independence movements having acquired advanced weaponry and the nation's military having split into competing factions. The escalating violence is threatening innocent civilians as well as Western economic interests, and so virtual battle ensues.

You have the choice to side with either of the game's two available factions: the Joint Operations force or an Indonesian rebel group. The usual roster of classes is available, offering distinct roles within the conflict, such as Rifleman, Gunner, Engineer, Medic, and the old favourite, Sniper. From here you're then thrust into the heart of battle, charged with navigating one of the game's massive maps, taking out the enemy and taking control of certain areas.

As mentioned before, the maps throughout Joint Ops are pretty darn big but, thankfully, there are a good few vehicles available that make negotiating your way around them a little less tiring. The Joint Ops team has access to the likes of amphibious ATVs, Stryker troop vehicles, Landing Craft Air Cushion boats, and Chinook helicopters; whereas the rebels can take advantage of armoured personnel carriers, armoured patrol boats, Halo choppers, and amphibious assault boats.

Obviously no game such as this would be complete without a more than adequate supply of weaponry - Joint Ops doesn't disappoint here. M60s, AT-4 rocket launchers, Soviet PKM machine guns, RPG-7 grenade launchers, claymores and grenades are all in abundance, helping keep the action more than a little explosive throughout.
