Summary

Famed for its efforts with the RTS genre, developer Nival's Blitzkrieg series proved popular with the gaming masses - even more so with the release of the Burning Horizon expansion. And with the Blitzkrieg 2 sequel still under heavy development, the original is to get a second, standalone add-on pack named Rolling Thunder.

Complete with the obligatory supply of new units, planes and vehicles, Rolling Thunder brings a further 18 missions to Blitzkrieg players that, as well being historically accurate, present would-be commanders with a new set of battlefield locales that range from Spain to the snowy forests of the Ardennes.

Getting into the game proper, existing Blitzkrieg veterans will quickly notice a number of changes and additions in the form of tactical variations, enemy units and enemy AI. Amphibian landings and tank pursuits are all part of the formula now.

Missions are much more taxing as well. Hardly a walk in the park, Rolling Thunder players must choose their units for a given situation, master the art of camouflage, learn to snipe and fight for the occupation of numerous stations, ports and factories in order to gain a tactical advantage over the enemy.

Even though Rolling Thunder effectively serves as a stopgap until the arrival Blitzkrieg 2, it's a standalone effort that's every bit as playable and demanding as the original.
