Summary

Deep in the Pacific Ocean in the city of Bikini Bottom lives a square yellow sea sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, loves his job as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, and has a knack for getting into trouble without really trying. When he's not getting on his cranky neighbour Squidward's nerves, SpongeBob's usually smack in the middle of a strange situation with his best starfish buddy, Patrick, or his thrill-seeking squirrel pal, Sandy Cheeks.

All this is the subject of the flagship Nickelodeon series of the same name as its absorbent hero, whose runaway success in recent years have finally warranted the production of a feature length movie. The films sees Spongebob and Patrick leave Bikini Bottom to search for King Neptune’s crown which has been stolen, perhaps by Spongebob’s boss Mr. Krabs. The chums must journey to Shell City, from where no-one has ever returned.

Developed by Heavy Iron Studios, THQ are bringing the story to Xbox and PC. The quirky humour of the TV series is the perfect thing to combine with fun, 3D platform action – in fact, SpongeBob has already starred in many video games - The Battle of Bikini Bottom for instance. In SpongeBob the Movie, it is in fact the evil Plankton who is really behind the theft of Neptune’s crown, and SpongeBob and Patrick must stop him at all costs, as he plans to enslave the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom with mind control technology.

The two chums can jump, double jump, hang off ledges and perform special moves like SpongeBob's Karate Spin, and as well as running and jumping around 3D environments inspired by the film, there are driving levels featured too. Depth is also added by collectible manliness points which allows the characters to be powered up through the game. It seems that here is a licensed game which does justice to its subject matter.
