Summary

Tim Burton and Deane Taylor’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is a modern animation classic. Fans hoping for a movie sequel shouldn’t hold their breath, although the forthcoming Corpse Bride looks like it will provide an even darker dose of animated mischief.

But the fantastic thing is, you can revisit the magical world of Halloweentown. Accompanying the release of the Oogie King, on PS2 and Xbox, which follows the adventures of Jack Skellington after the film, is this release on GBA, which retells the story of the film, in 2D platformer form.

As you’ll know if you’ve seen the film – and if you haven’t, you should – Halloweentown is taken over by the odious Oogie Boogie, a former holiday leader. Jack eventually triumphs over him to become the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown. This GBA remake features characters from the film like Zero, Sally, and Dr. Finkelstein. You can explore locations from the film such as the Town Square and Finkelstein’s Laboratory.

Gameplay involves the careful use of Jack-o-lanterns and Bat Boomerangs if you are to triumph over the Hideous Oogie Boogie and his posse of henchmen. As well as that, there are minigames to enjoy with your friends. The Nightmare Before Christmas is certainly an odd franchise for developers Capcom to take on, but we’re glad they did.
