Summary
Roller Coaster Tycoon, one of the best-selling PC game franchises of all time, is returning just in time for Christmas 2006. Re-packaging the third instalment in the series, along with the expansions Soaked! and Wild!, Roller Coaster Tycoon Deluxe offers a nifty little bundle of summer fun to see you through the cold, dark evenings of a British winter.
The premise behind RCT 3 remains the same as its predecessors. Given a substantial amount of cash, players must, as park manager, turn a barren piece of land into a bustling and profitable theme park in order to fulfil the criteria of a given scenario. Early stages will see players purchasing and installing small fairground rides to maintain a working profit that will hopefully bring in the cash needed to expand further. Once the ball is rolling, your income will accommodate bigger attractions and custom rollercoasters that, in turn, will boost the popularity of your park and turn over even greater profits.
The second and perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of RCT 3 is the player's freedom to create and build their own rollercoasters as they see fit. Now presented in full 3D, would-be theme park managers can now construct any number of wooden, steel, inverted, vertical, launched, flying and 4D coasters and even try them out via a front seat view. Design has thankfully been kept simple, negating the need for a tutorial, and the game's new 3D perspective helps players to overcome the visual obstructions that plagued the earlier games.
In the first expansion, subtitled 'Soaked', things are even more fun-packed, as you get the opportunity to build and experience a multitude of water rides in various guises. Don your branded poncho and ride the log flume!
As the name suggests, Wild! concerns itself with the sphere of Nature. Create your very own safari park, with giraffes, elephants and gorillas roaming in the background as guests enjoy the coasters you have on offer. There are more rides and attractions to build, as well as the added dynamic of keeping your more ferocious animals under secure lock and key, lest they devour visitors.
All in all, this latest addition to the RCT franchise looks set to offer the most complete coaster experience to date, bundled together under a neat little price tag.
