Act of War: Direct Action (AoW) is set in a depressing future, and shadowy organisations whose aims are unclear emerge from the woodwork to terrorise the people of the world's major cities. The situation calls for a hero, and that hero is US Army Major Jason Richter, a veteran maverick commander whose loose cannon nature has seen him fall out of favour with genteel modern White House politics. For now, though, he is just what's needed the most and is put in charge of the newly formed Task Force Talon. AoW is a real time strategy game. The player will have access to modern military technology and stuff that hasn't quite been invented yet. Highly detailed and destructible maps of London, Moscow, Washington and San Francisco are the battlefields, as you try to take terrorists alive to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, and save your wounded soldiers from certain death by evacuating them.
Boiling Point: Road to Hell takes gamers to the jungled landscape of a South American country populated by drug lords, guerrillas and the army of an oppressive government regime. The Commando-esque plot follows the story of ex-Legionnaire Saul Meyers, brought to South America by his search for his abducted daughter Lisa. There are no levels and there is no linear storyline in this action game; deep RPG elements will require you to destroy or ally yourself with the six NPC factions active in the region. The result is a rich interactive environment which can see you plying a gangster's henchman with drink in a bar in return for information, leaving and driving a jeep for several minutes along a road, then stumbling across a firefight between guerrillas and government forces and joining in if you fancy it, before taking to the sky in a helicopter to continue your search.
Strategy games have been known to cover many themes in the past. These games have been based in space and medieval environments to name but a few. But the Wild West theme has been left largely untouched. Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive was the first game of its kind based in a Wild West scenario. Set in New Mexico, the Twinnings & Co Railroad Company continues to be robbed. Hired for a large sum of cash, John Cooper (you) must team up with five other Desperados and bring the raids to an end.
In the Quantic Dreams-developed Fahrenheit, the year is 2009 and New York is rocked by a bizarre series of murders. People are killing people they don't know for no apparent reason, and each murder bears the same strange ritual hallmarks. At the same time, the temperature is dropping as it gets colder and colder every day. The latest person to commit one of these strange killings is Lucas Kane. Suddenly entering a sort of trance, he carves a symbol in his arm and murders a person he's never seen before, all the time hallucinating about a small, helpless girl. As he regains his senses, he flees the scene and realises he is now a criminal on the run. You can switch between four characters in the game: the damned Lucas himself, his brother Marcus, and two police detectives, Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles, as the drama unfolds and you try to make sense of the mystery.
GTR FIA GT Racing Game aims to bring the player all the high octane action and excitement of real life FIA GT racing. All your favourite cars are here, because all the teams are here, from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche to Lotus, Lister, Morgan and Saleen. By the same token, all the official drivers feature in the game, which can be played from the faithfully constructed cockpit models of these amazing racing machines. Every bump and bend of all ten official tracks are included, with Donington Park in England, Monza in Italy, Magny Cours in France and Circuit de Catalunya in Spain among the legendary names.
Mark Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure created its own genre of gameplay, combining combat, action, adventure and stealth. The game uses a thrilling graffiti-driven framework to tell its story of self-expression and the fight for creative freedom. A thug, an outcast, a rebel...the lead character, Trane, is all of these in Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure. He sets out to earn his street cred by getting his graffiti tag up throughout the politically oppressive city of New Radius but as events unfold, Trane becomes the unlikely leader of an urban revolution.
In Neverwinter Nights, a hideous evil has awoken in the Forgotten Realms. Now, in order to save the inhabitants of the town of Neverwinter, you must uncover a sinister conspiracy, unmask your mysterious betrayer and complete an epic struggle to defeat the powerful forces that look to halt your quest and unleash an evil your people would surely never survive.
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 (RCT 3) was released for the PC in 2004 and was the first game in the series to feature 3D graphics. The premise behind RCT 3 remains the same as its predecessors. Players must, as park manager, spend a sizeable amount of money which they have been given at the start of the game and turn a piece of land into a profitable theme park. Gamers start by purchasing and installing small fairground rides to maintain a working profit that will hopefully bring in enough cash to expand further. For your park to succeed, you will have to employ engineers to keep your attractions safe, cleaners and gardeners to maintain the park, and even entertainers to prevent boredom. When you have enough money, you can design and build any number of wooden, steel, vertical, inverted, launched, flying and 4D rollercoasters. It is even possible to see what all the fuss is about and try out your own rollercoasters via a front-seat view.
Atari Hits 2006 is a compilation that represents extremely good value for money. With eight very different games packed into this bundle, there should be something to float everyone's boat.
