Summary

Get ready for the world's first post-ironic video game. Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard is a sequel to every game that never existed, and a homage to one game that very definitely did. The story goes that Matt Hazard was once the ultimate video game action hero, delighting millions of fans during the 80s and 90s (the golden years of video games). But in recent years, Matt has fallen on hard times, and has yet to star in his own next-gen games title. Until now that is! Eat Lead gives you the opportunity to guide Matt through his next gen debut.

All this tomfoolery gives D3 Publisher the chance to have some fun with some doctored screenshots allegedly from Matt Hazzard's past, which is all good fun. But what really matters is the game, right? Matt Hazard comes back for one last virtual pay-day. But he discovers that his new game has been hacked, and the hackers want rid of Matt. In order to dispatch with our hero, the hacker has inserted hordes of enemies from Matt's made up back catalogue. This gives developer Vicious Cycle a perfect opportunity to celebrate everything that's great, and parody everything that's lame, from the last 30 years of video gaming history. Of course that would involve many genres, and several points of view, but Matt Hazard actually sticks to the third person shooter genre and uses the 'duck and fire' gameplay mechanic that you will be familiar with from many of that genre's games. The only original aspect of the game seems to be the incongruity between the enemies, "beamed" in from Matt's old games, and the levels. As is common for this kind of game, you get to fight with what your enemies drop, so this can result in you fighting aliens in a sci-fi level with a six-shooter dropped by a cowboy enemy.

Matt is voiced by Will Arnett, who you may know as the voice of Segway-riding Gob from Arrested Development, or Devon Banks from 30 Rock.
