Summary

In Summer Athletics 2009, you are catapulted into a world of sports and Olympic events with a concept being similar to that of other Olympic games for the Wii.

The 26 events are spread over Running, Jumping, Swimming, Throwing, Cycling, Archery and High Diving, with Running events probably being the most simple and most fun to play with friends. The game has a basic requirement of you having to flick the Wii Remote and Nunchuck up and down alternately and as fast as possible! Once you have this skill mastered, the fastest times rely on a quick start, which is achieved by flicking both controllers up on the sound of the gunshot.

Swimming is perhaps the highpoint, with freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke all being mimicked by you waving your arms around manically with the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck. Although after a few laps, your arms can definitely 'feel the burn'. However, diving isn't quite as exciting, unfortunately. It doesn't involve you launching yourself insanely from the sofa, it simply involves you jiggling your controllers around to the timing of the on-screen markers.

Multiplayer mode is probably where you'll get the most fun out of this game (even though the career mode is still worth playing), as playing against friends and family gives this game a more competitive edge. To give the competitive mode a touch more fun, the optional 'arcade' option gives each player some boosts, which can be used during the events of your choosing, depending on the event, these boosts operate in different ways, but no matter what, they always give you an advantage over your competitors.

A unique feature to the Wii version is the incorporation of the Wii Balance Board. Players must wiggle their hips around to spin the hammer and gather speed. And standing evenly is crucial in the archery. Using the Wii board adds an extra dimension to interactivity of the game.
