Summary

For many years Football Management games were the preserve of the truly geeky. Then it became apparent that attempting to manage a squad of no hopers from the bottom of the league (or from the start of a cup run) was as tactically, psychologically and mentally taxing as any RTS worth its name. Now the market for FM games is a strong one. EA's FIFA franchise returns in 2010 with a contender that boasts more than 400 tweaks and additions to the 2009 model.

For a start, the Internet is a major part of the experience. Once you've knocked your boys into shape and ensured that they can beat the AI – or at least compete with it – you can now take the battle to real, human competitors online. This will ensure that the challenge of FIFA Manager continues all the way up to the next iteration.

Before that, however, the player must organise the team's line-up, its tactics and its training. In modern day management that's not enough though. The virtual manager must also ensure that the club's stadium and other facilities are in as good a form as the team on the pitch.

Sort that lot out, with the help of the staff, and the player must ensure that his club is not carrying dead weight, nor is it missing out on talent that might strengthen the squad. This means learning to be savvy with FIFA Manager 10's transfer market.

Help is at hand via the Match Prognosis Tool, which provides useful insights into the best way to set-up and control your team come match day.

The 3D mode – which lifts the game from being a glorified spreadsheet like other management sims – has been tweaked with hundreds of updated animations; in fact it uses the same 3D system as EA Sport's classic FIFA 09 football-playing sim.
