Summary

Deep Ocean is an add-on pack for Anno 2070: the PC game that brings the realities of a post climate-change world to the real time strategy genre. This may not be the first scenario you imagine when you think of RTS gaming, but it makes a lot of sense. The impact of climate change brings a whole new long-term, large-scale challenge to a genre that is more typically just about conflict and resource management.

With the climate change aspect integrated into the game, several important aspects are introduced. Sea levels are higher, which changes the familiar world-map, as only high ground is above water level. As a result, natural resources are scarcer. The resulting geographical changes have split the population into three major factions: Tycoons, Ecos and Techs. Tycoons expand quickly, but at a high environmental cost in terms of used resources and water products. Ecos are much more sustainable in their approach, but at the cost of efficiency and speed. Techs work with both of the other factions to research an develop technologies appropriate to the lead faction's aims and characteristics. Deep Ocean introduces a new class of Tech, the Genius. And it also unlocks new rewards in each faction's career ladder.

Deep Ocean also brings leaderboards to the Anno 2070 game world, to enable users to monitor other players and compare their own performance. Additionally, the pack also brings the ability to perform "Hostile Takeovers" to acquire enemy territory without the use of military force. The ability to create underwater geothermal power plants, and to transfer the energy they produce between your islands. Commerce is facilitated by new underwater trading routes, and 150 new challenging quests and 30 achievements are added to extend the already vast and involving gameplay. The whole thing is rounded out by new vehicles and items, and new resources to exploit.

Anno 2070 already offers players a huge and involving game world, Deep Ocean makes it all that much deeper and more expansive.
