Summary

In Demon Gaze you take on the role of Oz, a chap who awakens in the cursed land of Misred on the world's western frontier, with no memory of who he is and what he's doing there. The world around him contains many labyrinths, with swag and danger in equal measure. Unsure of what else to do, Oz sets out to hunt for artefacts and make a living in a world he barely understands. Fortunately, he has a special ability on his side - he can stare down demons and draw them into himself, subsequently turning them into Demon Keys that can be summoned at will.

While Demon Gaze looks at a glance like a modern Japanese roleplaying game, it actually has quite an old-school twist. While the narrative is certainly delivered with gusto, Demon Gaze bears many of the hallmarks of an old-school, grid-based dungeon crawler. Players will need to tackle different dungeons, conquering locations within them to get at better equipment and draw out the boss.

Finding goodies and generally getting around won't be easy, though. The most obvious example of this is the 'loot maps' you occasionally find, which willfully obscure the names of areas and demons so you'll have to decipher their meaning. Adding another layer to this is an online messaging system reminiscent of Dark Souls, through which players can leave messages scrawled on the dungeon floor for each other. But... are the other players telling the truth?

Demon Gaze comes with customisable party creation - there are more than 90 character portraits, five races and eight different classes to choose from.

Overall, Demon Gaze is a worthy addition to the Vita's RPG library with plenty of game content to draw you in with its peculiar gaze...
