Summary

In 2010 players got reintroduced to one of gaming's greatest heroines in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. It was a break from the Tomb Raider series' usual gameplay style, forsaking the usual over-the-shoulder style in favour of a camera that floats high up, giving an isometric point of view. With the benefit of hindsight, it's clear that developer Crystal Dynamics was in the process of setting up two parallel versions of Lara. The later 2013 origin story got the Tomb Raider name and a down-to-Earth, gritty style, while the isometric games got classic, over-the-top Lara dialed up to 11.

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris picks up the baton for the latter. Lara and rival archaeologist Carter Bell, in a race to be the first to breach an Egyptian temple, find themselves with more than they bargained for. Cursed, they must work with the newly-awakened gods Horus and Isis to resurrect Osiris, escape judgment and prevent the rise of the dark god Set.

Make no mistake, this game isn't about stealthily sneaking around forests and doing your best to survive - this is all-out action, running around the screen with Egyptian gods of old, magic flying everywhere. The gameplay is a mix of frantic shooting, epic puzzle-solving and old-school platforming across a large (and let's be honest, bonkers) world.

The biggest change to this year's offering is that the number of players able to get involved at once has been upped to four. As well as Lara and Carter, players can control the magic-wielding Horus and Isis. Both wield the Staff of Osiris, which can create shields to either deflect attacks or help the others climb to new heights.

At the time of launch it will be a while until Rise of the Tomb Raider, but Temple of Osiris has its own brand of Lara action to offer fans.
