In a genre increasingly populated by finely-tuned simulators at one end and disposable kart racers at the other, Trackmania Turbo is an interesting proposition for racing games.
On the one hand, it's absolutely barmy. It's a matchbox car fantasy on an epic scale. Tracks have you leaping off the edge of canyons, driving up walls, doing mad loop the loops and attaching to magnetic rollercoaster tracks. So far, so kart racer-ish.
Except, even at the easier levels Trackmania Turbo requires a high level of precision. The instant restart button is certainly your friend, giving the game a certain fiendish similarity to another Ubisoft game, Trials. This need for precision makes some of the obstacles and track elements almost like puzzles to be solved.
The game also has a beefy track builder mode. If you're just looking for variety it will generate a track at random for you to approve, but it also comes with three tiers of sophistication through which you can build and share your own courses.
There are a few different multiplayer modes on offer. Offline, the game offers splitscreen. Online, it offers the chance to race against no less than 100 player ghosts, all going up against you in real time. Perhaps the weirdest and most novel multiplayer mode, however, is 'Double Driver'. In this co-op mode, two players are each given 50 per cent control of the same vehicle, requiring some very well-coordinated play!
