Summary

No-one could accuse Transformers: Devastation with being a dull proposition. It matches the blockbuster Transformers franchise with one of the most interesting developers working today - Platinum Games, the studio behind the likes of Bayonetta, Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising.

One thing that's immediately apparent is that Platinum has taken the games industry's best shot to date at recreating the look and feel of the animated series. This is decidedly not a tie-in to the Michael Bay movies and sits much closer to the source material than some recent tie-ins.

In this nostalgia-fuelled romp players side with the Autobots, taking on the might of the Decepticons and trying to stop Megatron from harnessing the power of plasma energy to terraform Earth!

Combat will be familiar to fans of Bayonetta. That, in a nut-shell, means fast and furious melee combat complemented by ranged weapons and a healthy disregard for physics. Players take on the role of one of five ground-based Autobots - Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock. Each has their own speciality moves, and is constantly getting the benefit of new moves and weapons to amp up the action. Combos are the key, and players can, of course, transform on a dime to incorporate their vehicle forms into their smack-downs.

The icing on the cake for Transformers fans will be actors from the original TV series reprising their roles for the game, including Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime), Dan Gilvezan (Bumblebee) and Frank Welker (Megatron and Soundwave).
