Summary

Things are bad. The world is on the brink of war over the control of energy crystals, the planet's primary source of power. With this as a backdrop, players must form a top-flight group of explorers to venture onto an island rich in crystals, battling hordes of monsters to gain control of an object that could change everything - the newly-discovered grand crystal.

As an action RPG, Final Fantasy Explorers plays out a lot like Monster Hunter. Players must constantly send their characters into battle, earning rewards to level up and take on ever greater challenges. Players can either team up with friends through the 3DS's wireless functionality or work with the AI to conquer their foes.

One interesting element of this is the ability to fuse monsters. Once you've slain certain enemies, you can pay to create them as a party member. You can also, however, level them up and fuse them together to create even stronger combatants.

While Explorers might have a few things in common with Monster Hunter, however, it has one thing that only Square Enix can offer - the legacy of Final Fantasy. This is a game that's loaded up with goodies for fans of the series to chew on. Classic bosses like Ifrit and Shiva keep you on your toes, classic monsters such as Chocobos and Adamantoise litter the landscape and you can even transform into legendary characters such as Cloud and Lightning. In other words, it's Final Fantasy through and through!
