Summary

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings rounds out the latest sequence in the storied Atelier series, the Mysterious trilogy.

For the uniniated, the Atelier franchise is a series of Japanese role-playing games that was doing crafting waaaaaay before crafting was cool. It centres around the idea of the atelier as an artist's workshop - in this case, based around the *ahem* 'science' of alchemy. Players must explore beautiful worlds, collecting materials to use in their alchemy so that they can create items of increasing power and use them in the game's turn-based combat.

In this case, the game centres around Lydie and Suelle, aspiring alchemists who work alongside their father, Roger. When they explore his basement and unexpectedly find themselves entering one of the paintings down there, however, everything changes. Not only do they hold rare and valuable materials - they also contain the lingering thoughts of their deceased mother. The girls decide to double down on their studies under the tutelage of returning character Illmeria and begin an adventure of exploration, journeying through paintings ranging from the Halloween-inspired The Spooky Forest to the light and ethereal Heavenly Flower Garden.

JRPGs aren't exactly known for their dystopian doom and gloom, but Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings is truly an opportunity to escape to multiple magical worlds.
