Summary

For 18 years the Total War series has been embroiling gamers in vast, bloody conflicts across history. Perhaps understandably, however, this history has resulted in an accruement of features and a scale that can be intimidating to new players. With Total War Saga: Thrones Of Britannia Creative Assembly and SEGA are looking to address that.

Thrones of Britannia is the first of the Sagas, a sub-series that's intended to provide strategy games with a tighter focus and greater accessibility. The game takes players to 878AD. The Norse warlords are firmly ensconced in this Dark Ages Britain, but the ambitious kings of fractured Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England (not least of whom is a certain Alfred of Wessex) have plans of their own for the small island. It's a bristling furnace of tension and violence, and the crucible of modern Britain. This is the campaign map - the most detailed ever seen in a Total War game - on which you'll make your bid for supremacy.

The focus here is very squarely on war. You'll build up your kingdom, train troops, build structures and engage in diplomacy, but the real grist is when a battle starts and the game switches to real-time strategy.

If you've been looking for a way in to the world of strategy games - or just a tighter, more combat-focused experience - Thrones of Britannia is the game you've been waiting for.
