Summary

Zanki Zero: Last Beginning is a fascinatingly weird take on the dungeon-crawling RPG genre - it blends in survival game mechanics into the mix and places the action on a post-apocalyptic island. The effect is a vibe that's reminiscent of Bear Gryhlls' The Island if it was set on a run-down tropical paradise. And we haven't even got to the interesting twist yet.

You play as eight different characters trying to make it in this ruined world. There's a catch, though - they're clones with a built-in mechanism that has them live out a full life cycle in just 13 days. That means that as you play with them, you have to contend with them ageing from childhood into adulthood and into old age, affecting their capabilities as you do.

Happily, there's a mysterious life extension machine on the island and if you use it you carry everything you've earned into your next life. To operate it, though, you'll need to gather enough resources. That's where the dungeon crawling comes in - not only do you need to gather the things you need to craft the objects that will keep you alive, you also have to earn enough to use the machine and begin a new life cycle.

It's a uniquely weird concept that puts a serious twist on the usual mechanics of survival games and dungeon crawlers.
