Summary

You thought it was finally safe to switch on your Game Boy Advance, but you were wrong. The old school Space Invaders are back, and with a vengeance. Brought back to life on PlayStation and PC after a couple of decades in the attic, the pixelated virtual aliens are emigrating onto Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance.

It’s the same game it’s always been, but at least it has been revamped. Despite existing on one of the smallest video game screens, the little critters are now viewable in full colour and are even animated. There are even themed backgrounds! Considering the visuals of the original game, that’s quite an improvement.

Now, as far as gameplay is concerned, this latest Space Invaders update really does its many predecessors justice. Gameplay is virtually identical to the original and reminds us just how captivating it is. There are aliens coming from the sky and you must shoot them down before they destroy you and take over the world.

There’s something to be said for the simplicity of old games. Sure, the story supposedly gives the game a purpose, but it's still focused upon great gameplay. Space Invaders is as addictive as it ever was, and the new and enhanced version lets veterans of the game relive past pleasures. And you only have to pay once!

As ever, Space Invaders will have you coming back for more for another 20 years to come. There simply isn’t a better way to enjoy a train ride to work.
