Summary

Now here's a fairly novel concept. Instead of having a game based on war, weapons, destruction and the usual mayhem, we have a game that focuses on the more savoury side of things - the emergency services. A refreshing change from the wealth of uber-violence available at the moment, Emergency 2: The Ultimate Fight for Life places players in command of a wide variety of rescue staff and vehicles, giving them the task of saving peoples' lives.

In a typical RTS, isometric style, the game presents mouse-driven, strategy management-style proceedings, based around an array of various different disasters. From infiltrating traffic pile-ups, containing nuclear power plant meltdowns, to rushing victims to safety and dealing with forest fires, the 25 diverse and realistic scenarios present a fair amount of problematic situations.

Beginning from a central control room, missions first require monitoring of the disaster situation before an efficient route can be planned out and the services subsequently sent in. Different vehicles can solve different problems; tow trucks can clear away wreckage and fire engines (you guessed it) can extinguish fires. Failure to carry out such objectives in the correct way and in the given time limit will result in citizen casualties and game over.

With video games being blamed for an increasing amount of evil-doings, it's a good thing to see a game with a little more moral fibre. Any budding young firemen out there? This is a good place to start.
