Summary

One of the few comic book super heroes not to originate from either the Marvel or the DC Comics worlds, Spawn was popularised by a big screen movie of the same name in 1997 (before Hollywood's obsession with super heroes grew to the uncontrollable state it's in now) and has also appeared in a number of video games in the past. This latest release from Namco is the first we've seen of the devil-dealing dead dude in quite a while, but he's back, appearing in an action-packed adventure/beat-em-up for the PlayStation 2.

The story sees the famous anti-hero once again stuck between good and evil, as he struggles to break free from the controlling influences of Heaven and Hell. This basically results in the guy having to kick some serious ass with a relentless onslaught of malevolent monsters and angelic adversaries, as he makes his way throughout the game's 25 missions and 60 or so sub-levels.

Taking control of the fella, you obviously get to benefit from his impressive roster of abilities and weapons - of which there are many. His main basic weapon is a standard issue axe, which is perfectly sufficient for dealing close-up with the hordes, whilst the famous living chains are available to cater for more long-range attacks and airborne assailants. On top of this, you also get to collect a range of other ballistic items, such as shotguns and missile launchers, as well as take advantage of assorted magic that can further enhance his abilities.

As well as all the mindless hacking, slashing and shooting, Spawn Armageddon also has a fair amount of platforming elements on offer. As you make your way through each of the levels there's always a bout of wall-scaling and well-timed jumping to be undertaken, and you're also required to make use of the guy's cape for gliding and the chains for a grapple.

Whilst it doesn't exactly offer anything new to the genre, Spawn Armageddon does the whole 'super hero action adventure' thing well, delivering a solid game world full of plenty of intense combat. The game's been likened to Capcom's Devil May Cry on more than one occasion - if you're into the idea of exploration plus frenzied button-bashing then you certainly won't be disappointed.
