The company was founded in October, 1994, in Kirkland, Washington, by a small group of individuals with an extensive history in the computer and educational games market. While still developers at Edmark, Monolith's founders decided to enter the fiercely competitive European 'demo' scene with a Windows-based prototype that demonstrated the kind of gaming graphics that, at the time, were believed possible only by using DOS. This demo caught the eye of Microsoft Corporation, with whom the Monolith founders worked on an early version of what is now the LithTech Development System. These early projects lead to the formation of the original company, which at the time included both a publishing division as well as internal development teams.
In February 2000, the company spun off LithTech, Inc., a technology subsidiary focused on the creation of advanced 3D development systems. LithTech is dedicated to licensing robust tools and technologies to third parties and providing users of their development system with quality customer support.
Now focused exclusively on independent development, Monolith has cultivated relationships with a wide variety of partners and publishers within the industry. With three internal development teams, current partners include Fox Interactive, Warner Bros., and Buena Vista Interactive.
Monolith's first work that SPOnG is aware of is the 2000 title, "The Operative: No One Lives Forever" (PC).
The company has been involved titles released on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, 3DS/2DS, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, DS/DSi, PS2, Power Mac and GameCube. Of these, "Matrix Online, The" (PC), "F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin" (PS3), "F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin" (Xbox 360), "F.E.A.R." (PC), "F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin" (PC) has been a best selling title.
The company's most recent involvement was on the 2018 release "Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition" (Xbox One).
