Summary

Power Stone for the Sega Dreamcast is the first fighting game to make really good use of it’s backgrounds. The beat-em-up genre has evolved significantly since the days when the background was just a two-dimensional drawing. Virtua Fighter was the game to introduce 3-d polygon fighters and a camera system. Although 3-d fighting games have come along in terms of graphics and gameplay, Power Stone is the game to combine both and introduce 3-d interactive backgrounds. You can pick up tables, chairs and benches to throw at your opponent or you can pick up several weapons. Weapons, now we’re talking fun. In Power Stone you can use a chaingun or even a rocket launcher to try and win the bout. One main difference is that you can’t block an attack in this game. You need to get your attack in first or becoming very good at evading. The latter is recommended and makes a nice alternative to normal beat-em-ups. You can jump onto poles, leap off and grab the ceiling, climb about before finally throwing yourself up onto the roof. Once you have a nice strategic position, go for the kill.

The way Power Stone works is that each fighter starts off with a gem. By attacking the other player you steal their gem and when you collect the third, your character evolves into a super enhanced, high damage version. When you are powered up your moves become supers and things really heat up. In addition to all this fighting fun and originality Power Stone has plenty of secrets and hidden features that add to the re-playability factor. Power Stone is unique and worth checking out.
