Summary

There have been more than a dozen Jurassic Park games and simulators developed for consoles and PC, but none have shown more promise, more realism or more great gameplay than Vivendi's Operation Genesis.

In a Theme Park meets Zoo Tycoon effort, Operation Genesis charges players with the task of creating, designing and maintaining every nook and cranny of a new dinosaur-populated theme park, similar in many respects to the original film. One of the most comprehensive games in its genre, this game has players taking charge of dozens of aspects of running a park, right down to construction, cloning and caring, entertaining, protecting and even rescuing. Yes, those pesky Velociraptor and T-Rex are harder to contain than you might think, and when you have a breach, all hell breaks loose. The trick is to place your units and fences so that your visitors can't get to the dinosaurs and the dinosaurs can't get to them. Fail in this fundamental aspect of prehistoric park design and you'll have a real fight on your hands.

Developed by Blue Tongue, Operation Genesis is certainly one of the most visually pleasing games we've come across for a while. Environments are rich, vibrant, crisp, and the native inhabitants of this new world looks just as accomplished. And it's all in full 3D splendour.

But Operation Genesis excels itself as the best in the series not because of top-notch eye candy, but because of its diverse gameplay, incorporating two such distinct genres - management and combat - into a single gameplay experience. Great stuff.
