Summary

Following nearly a year after the PC release of the same game, Lego Drome Racers for GameCube is finally ready, boasting the arcade-style gameplay of the original and an all-new Battle Mode.

A multi-terrain experience of on-road, off-road and drag racing, Drome Racers pits young speedsters against an equally matched crew of enemy racers in the formidable Drome Championship. You'll be behind the wheel of a number of hi-tech and perfectly shaped cars based on the 2002 collection of Lego Racers. A car customisation option allows racers to adapt and fine-tune their cars to meet the specifications of individual races.

Circuits blend seamlessly with one another and span several tough locations including cities, mountains and canyons, and all are suitably detailed and fit nicely into the Lego world. It's not exactly geometrically perfect, but the PC hardware does a fine job of throwing together some cracking environments.

Mario Kart-esque pick-ups are also littered around each of the courses, and in many cases, will help their owners steal podium places from other racers. Play dirty, it's the only way.

There are several modes of play available, including Arcade mode and the ever-competitive Time Trial mode. New for the GameCube version though, is Battle Mode, which accommodates a multi-player split-screen game. Up to four players can battle it out in special arenas in the Drome.

Drome Racers is another fine addition to the ever-growing Lego range of video games, and has found the ideal platform in the GameCube.
